Supercars: Why the review of Scott McLaughlin’s pit speeding penalty is necessary

COMMENT: THERE are a few points that need to be made about the move by DJR Team Penske and Supercars to review the pit lane speeding penalty that derailed the final race of Scott McLaughlin’s 2017 season.

Let’s start with the most important one: it won’t change the outcome of the championship.

Jamie Whincup can forever be recorded as the winning driver of the 2017 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship regardless of what Monday’s meeting between the series’ technical officials and this year’s champion team turns up.

You can’t undo what happened in the subsequent 81 laps of the race, the ones which saw McLaughlin fight back through the field twice, only to make mistakes that ultimately cost him a maiden Supercars championship.
