Canberra’s Lauren Wells has crashed out of medal contention in the 400 metre hurdles at the Commonwealth Games.
Wells ran a season’s best of 55.73 but it wasn’t enough as she finished fifth in her heat at Carrara Stadium on Tuesday.
It was not enough for the 29-year-old to advance to the final in a cruel blow for the 11-time national champion that was eyeing the Gold Coast Games as a potential swansong.
Australia will not have a representative in the 400m hurdles final.
Wells has a chance to make amends when she returns for the qualifying stages of the long jump on Wednesday.
Courageous effort from @Loz_Wells who ran her heart out. A great season’s best of 55.73 but unfortunately she doesn’t progress to the final.
That’s shattering news for the 11-times national champion but will see her back at the stadium in the qualifying of the LJ tomorrow.
